Tuesday of the Second Week of Lent C
Sometimes, I have always wondered about the section in today's Gospel that invites us not to be called “Rabbi”, because we have only one teacher, or “father”, because we only have one Father Who is in Heaven. Anyone's concern would be so, because they would not understand why we, then, proceed to use the same references toward the spiritual leaders of the Church, or even call one of our biological parents or guardians (or patron) “father”?
The conclusion in the Gospel text introduces a state of humility, moreover after Jesus had, earlier, communicated about the strange conduct of the Pharisees and Scribes (a symbolic state of pride and power). What Our LORD is saying here, is that we are only mediums and that we need not to elevate ourselves to a position of being adored, even if we are, in a way visible 'leaders', but, yet not the ultimate authority. The illustrative presentation of the Pharisees and Scribes reflects their action, and invites us to act humbly even if we are leading.
Here is what Moses and Aaron said when the people of Israel complained about food: “your complaining is not against us, - 'for what are we?' (Exodus 16:7, 8)”. Moses and Aaron considered themselves nothing. They lowered themselves, and let God take precedence. This is a troubling challenge for many: in their homes, communities, jurisdictions as well as in churches.
God bless you!
